Maimonides (1135–1204) was a major Jewish scholar and commentator in the field of Jewish law. This document is a response by Maimonides to a dispute related to a circumstance involving circumcision.

Eastern Europe

The Jews who were expelled moved eastward. In the 16th century, Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey) had the largest Jewish community in Europe. Most of the Jews expelled from the northern European countries moved to Poland and Russia. The Jews of Eastern Europe are called Ashkenazi or Ashkenazic Jews. By the mid-17th century there were half a million Jews in Poland. But a decade of major persecutions (1648–58) destroyed many Jewish communities there. Laws kept Jews from all professions and skilled occupations, forcing them to live by means of small-scale buying and selling and money-lending (banking), but they still were allowed to keep the Sabbath and the feasts in the prescribed way.
